Abstract

911,900. Sharpening cutting-edges. COX, K. B. Sept. 19, 1961 [Nov. 2, 1960], No. 37601/60. Class 60. A holder for a blade, e.g. of carpenter's planes, spoke-shaves and similar wood-working tools, whilst being sharpened on an oil-stone 6, whet-stone or the like comprises a substantially U-shaped frame provided with rollers 5, 5 at the ends of its limbs 1, 2, said frame being of such width as to straddle the oil stone 6, whet stone or the like so that the rollers move on the surface supporting the stone and, at or near the top of the frame there is a cross-bar 7 for supporting the blade being sharpened, this cross-bar being rotatable about an axis transverse to the blade and means being provided to secure it in any selected angular position, the cross-bar embodying means for receiving and holding the blade to be sharpened. The limbs 1, 2 are bent outwardly from and integral with a transverse bar 3. The cross-bar 7 has downwardly turned ends 7a, one of which is engaged by a rivet 8 held in the limb 1, while the other carries a screw 9 passing through the limb 2 into a nut 10 which clamps the cross-bar 7 in its selected angular position. At the centre of the cross-bar 7 is a raised portion 11 adapted to fit within the central slot 12 of a plane blade 13. The blade is clamped by a nut 15 on a screw 14 extending upwardly from the portion 11. In a modification, one end of the cross-bar 7 and the adjacent limb are marked with a scale and pointer and the blades are provided with a marker to determine their correct position on the cross-bar. In another modification, the main part of the holder is a dome-shaped or like rigid sheet-metal pressing, the upper part of which is shaped to fit the hand of the user.
