Abstract

911,854. Mixing-appliances. DRAISWERKE G.m.b.H. Jan. 13, 1961 [Dec. 8, 1960], No. 1561/61. Class 86. A mixer for pulverulent and granular materials especially thermoplastics comprises a horizontal cylindrical container 1 having an axial shaft 8 and stirrers 12, 13, a feed hopper 3 and in the ends of the drum circular intake and outlet orifices 4, 6 which are coaxial with the shaft 8. Material is fed, and the shaft rotates, at such rates that the materials are centrifuged to form on the inner surface of the drum an annular layer 14 the inner diameter of which is greater than that of the intake orifice 4. The shaft 8 also carries discs 15 the rims of which enter the annular layer so that all materials must pass through the gaps between the discs and the drum. In the section A of the drum the stirrers 12 are shaped to promote, in conjunction with the rates of rotation and of material feed, sufficient friction in the mixing process to generate heat enough to granulate or gelatinize the thermoplastic ; plasticizer may be added through the radially directed nozzles 20, 21 in the drum casing or 25 carried on the shaft 8 and fed by an axial bore 23 therein. The section B of the drum is a cooling zone in which the stirrers 13 are relatively fewer and are shaped to operate with minimum friction; a cooling medium may be circulated through the jacket 16. The shaft 8 may be divided at the junction of sections A and B, that in section B being driven at the slower speed. The end wall 5 may be replaceable to permit others with orifices 6 of different diameters to be inserted, or the aperture 6 may be adjustable by pivotable segments, see Fig. 4 (not shown), which may be arranged in the manner of an iris diaphragm, or by radially adjustable segments or by a twistable tube. The stirrers may be angled to progress or extend the materials in their passage through the drum, and may sweep only 40% to 70% of the length of the drum. The ends of the shaft 8 may have counterfeed screw portions 29.
