918,479. Cold separation of gas mixtures. CONCH INTERNATIONAL METHANE Ltd. Oct. 11, 1961, No. 36442/61. Addition to 894,102. Class 8(2). Removal of solidifiable impurities e.g., hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide from a crude gas e.g., methane as claimed in the parent Specification is accompanied by removal of a contaminant gas of lower boiling point than methane e.g., nitrogen or hydrogen which is effected by liquefying the crude gas without solidifying the impurities e.g., by expansion in a turbine 2, cooling in a heat exchanger 4 traversed by cold separated constituents, expansion of crude liquid gas containing uncondensed nitrogen at a valve 8 into a chamber 9 so as to form a slurry of solid impurities, a flash-off vapour and gaseous nitrogen which is vented through a valved duct 42; the flashed off vapour being condensed by heat exchange at 10 with purified liquid methane and returning it to the slurry which is then expanded at a valve 20 into a separator 21 from which a concentrated slurry of solid impurities is withdrawn through a duct 32, pure liquid methane is withdrawn through a duct 25 and is forced by a pump 26 through the condenser 10 and by a second pump 28 through a duct 31 and the exchanger 4 to a discharge duct, and pure methane gas is withdrawn through a duet 22 and traverses the exchanger 4. In the event of the crude methane containing 7 mol per cent or more of hydrogen sulphide the liquefied gas leaving the exchanger 4 comprises two liquid phases which are separated in a decanter 6 into an upper methane rich layer of liquid which is expanded into chambers 9, 13-18 in series and into a lower layer rich in hydrogen sulphide which is expanded into a chamber 37 to form a concentrated slurry and a flash-off methane gas containing about 3% hydrogen sulphide; the cold content of the slurry and gas being recovered in exchanger 4. Flash-off vapour from separator 21 traverses an exchanger 23 in countercurrent to a minor portion of purified liquid methane leaving the pump 28 through a line 29 for return to line 27 and the so-warmed vapour is then passed through the exchanger 4 and a compressor 24 driven by the turbine 2.
