Abstract

An oxidation catalyst suitable for R.CH2OH--->R.CHO is made by reacting an aqueous suspension or solution of an alkaline earth oxalomolybdate-V with an aqueous metal sulphate solution from a metal oxalomolybdate-V complex and applying the aqueous product by impregnation to an inert carrier followed by thermal activation thereof. The preferred alkaline earth is Ba and specified metal sulphates are Fe, Mn, Zn, Sn and Th sulphates preferably used in amounts from between 0,01 mol. to stoichiometric. Additionally salts of Cu, Cd, Mn, Zn, Co, Ni, Sn, or V the anions of which do not form insoluble compounds with the components of the complex, may be added in amounts from between 0,01-2 mol. relative to the molybdenium oxide of the complex. Specified inert carriers are pumice, SiC and Al2O3. Examples are given.ALSO:Conversion of alcohols to aldehydes is effected in the presence of a thermally activated support having adsorbed thereon a metal oxalomolybdate V complex which was made by treating an aqueous solution or suspension of an alkaline earth (e.g. Ba) oxalomolybdate V complex with an aqueous metal sulphate solution. Specified sulphate solutions are those of Fe, Mn, Zn, Sn and Th. Additionally the catalyst may contain Cu, Cd, Mn, Zn, Co, Ni, Sn or V ions. Specified supports are pumice, SiC and Al2O3. Examples describe the conversion of CH3OH to HCHO at high temperature and atmospheric pressure.
