Abstract

Solutions in volatile solvents of explosionprone peroxides suitable for use as free-radical polymerization catalysts in the polymerization of unsaturated compounds contain as stabilizer 30 to 100% by weight, calculated on the quantity of peroxide present, of a polymer or poly-condensation product dissolved in the volatile solvent. The peroxide may be dibenzoyl, dilauryl, diacetyl, cyclohexanone, methyl ethyl ketone, diethyl or dicumyl peroxide, tertiary butyl or cumyl hydroperoxide, tertiary butyl peracetate or peracetic acid, and the stabilizer may be polystyrene, polyvinyl acetate, propionate or stearate, polymethyl- or polybutylacrylate, polyisopropyl- or polyhexyl-methacrylate, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, a copolymer of vinyl acetate and crotonic acid or vinyl chloride, polyvinyl butyl ether, a copolymer of vinyl butyl ether and maleic anhydride, or an unsaturated polyester obtained from a glycol and maleic anhydride if desired in combination with a dicarboxylic acid such as sebacic or phthalic acid. The volatile solvent may be toluene, benzene, methanol, ethanol, butanol, diethyl ether, acetone, ethyl acetate, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride or dioxane, or a mixture of two or more of these solvents, or may be the monomer to be polymerized such as vinyl acetate, styrene, vinyl chloride, a vinyl ether or a maleic acid ester.ALSO:In the polymerization of unsaturated compounds using explosion-prone peroxides as free-radical polymerization catalysts, the peroxides may be employed in solution in volatile solvents also containing as stabilizer 30 to 100% by weight, calculated on the weight of peroxide present, of a polymer or polycondensation product dissolved in the volatile solvent (see Group III). The peroxide may be dibenzoyl, dilauryl, diacetyl, cyclohexanone, methyl ethyl ketone, diethyl or dicumyl peroxide, tertiary butyl or cumyl hydroperoxide, tertiary butyl peracetate or peracetic acid, and the peroxide solutions can be employed in the manufacture of polyvinyl acetate, polyacrylates, polymethacrylates, polyacrylonitrile, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride or copolymers of unsaturated esters, such as those obtained from glycols and maleic acid, with styrene.
