Abstract
914,307. High frequency discharge tubes. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 11, 1959 [March 20, 1958], No. 8900/58. Class 39 (1). In a retarding-field oscillator, having electrongun 6, Fig. 2, cavity resonator 12 and a reflector electrode 16 disposed in the resonator, a coupling is provided between the resonator 12 and additional resonator 14 by means of a short coaxial transmission line 15, the auxiliary resonant cavity being such that when its resonant frequency is varied, as by means of screw 22, the resonant frequency of the cavity 12 is also altered. The reflector 16 is supported rigidly by insulating annular ceramic member 17 and the output power may be derived by coupling a waveguide (not shown) to aperture 18. Perpendicular to the axis of the reflector is provided a lead 19 which serves to connect the electrode to a suitable potential. The lead is so placed that the coupling between it and the field in the cavity 14 is at a minimum and is provided with a choke tube 21. The choke may also be in the form of a disc covering the lead aperture externally, Fig. 5 (not shown). In another embodiment the auxiliary cavity 14, Fig. 4, is disposed beside the first cavity 12, and the output waveguide 26 is coupled to the cavity 12 by means of coaxial line 15. The auxiliary resonator is tuned as before by screw 22. The reflector may be thickened so as to form part of the cavity wall. Other tuning means may be employed such as a displaceable wall portion, or a fixed ferrite slug energized by a variable magnetic field.
