[Also in Group XIII] A heat exchanger is formed by stacking together units of the type shown in Fig. 1 which are of mild or stainless steel sheet bent to provide top and bottom surfaces 10 and 11 respectively with an integral connecting portion 12 along one side. As shown in Fig. 8, the sheets are bent by folding tools 39 and 40 while the portion 12 is engaged between a member 41 and a backing bar 42, the latter being connected to a pressure transmitting member 43 by legs 44 which project between heat transfer projections 22 during the final stages of folding. Along the sides of the unit inwardly turned co-operating flanges 19, 20 and outwardly turned flanges 16, 17 are provided while further outwardly turned flanges 14 and 15 are formed along the open side 13. The units are stacked together as shown in Fig. 2 so that the flanges 14, 15, 16 and 17 of adjacent units co-operate and openings 18 and 31 to the interior of the units and to the space between the units respectively are defined. Fluid-tight junctions are made when necessary by applying copper foil or powder to them contacting faces to be joined and heating the assembled heat exchanger in a furnace in a reducing atmosphere.
