Abstract

An orally ingestible solid penicillin composition in dosage unit form and of specified potency comprises penicillin, a solid pharmaceutical vehicle and a chelating agent, said chelating agent being a salt of ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid, the actual content of penicillin in said composition being not substantially in excess of that theoretically required to impart said specified potency to the composition and the potency of said composition as determined by assay being substantially identical with said specified potency within the limits of experimental accuracy. The penicillin may be any penicillin, e.g. penicillin 9 or penicillin V, or any therapeutic form thereof, e.g. potassium salt. The preferred chelating agent is the disodium salt of ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid. The preparations preferably contain calcium carbonate.
