909,023. Locating magnetic bodies. FORGES ET ATELIERS DE CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTRIQUE DE JEUMONT. Oct. 31, 1960 [Nov. 2, 1959], No. 37305/60. Class 37. [Also in Group XXX] A device for indicating the movement of a magnetizable or magnetic body includes a gapless saturable magnetic core carrying a winding, means for saturating the core such that the saturated condition is departed from, by reason of disturbance of the saturating magnetic field by the body, only when the latter is in the proximity of the device, and means for indicating the reactance of the coil. A constant A.C. voltage is applied across the resistor Z, Fig. 1, and the winding on iron core C, which is saturated by the field of a permanent or electromagnet P, the departure from saturation produced by the presence of the magnetic body S in the intervening gap being indicated by the drop in voltage across resistor Z produced by the increase in reactance of the winding. The position of the skip of a mine hoist B, Fig. 3, of several different stages, each provided with a corresponding magnetic member S 1 , and moving perpendicular to the plane of the paper, is indicated by inequality in the currents i 1 and i 2 , the resulting current in the secondary winding being fed to relay M to operate control or indication circuit D. If the skip itself is magnetic, its presence is indicated by a decrease in voltage across impedance Z<SP>1</SP>. Another embodiment (see Group XX), indicates, by use of a transistor relay, the passage of railway vehicles. The circuit of a further embodiment, Fig. 6, indicates the direction of movement of a body by the sequence of the polarity changes of the voltage across the terminals of relay Mp. A further embodiment, Fig. 7, in which the cores have D.C. windings e 1 and e 2 and q 1 and q 2 , producing magnetic fluxes in, opposite senses, indicates the direction of movement of a body provided with a magnet P 1 , and the polarity of the magnet with respect to cores C 1 and C 2 .
