908,923. Electrolytic cells. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Feb. 28, 1961 [March 7, 1960], No. 7322/61. Class 41. An electrolytic cell, suitable for electrolysing brine to produce sodium chlorate, comprises a container 11 of iron or mild steel having integral cathode plates 22 perpendicular to one side and a flanged port in the opposite side closed by a titanium plate 20 insulated from the container by a rubber gasket 25 and bearing anode sheets 33 of titanium or titanium alloy coated with platinum or other metals of the platinum group which interleave with the cathodes. The anodes and cathodes are spaced apart by bars 34 of glass or " Teflon " (Registered Trade Mark) which are held by " Teflon " retainers 35. Current is supplied to the electrodes via busbars 24, e.g. of copper, on plates 23, e.g. of copper or aluminium, which distribute the current over the side of the container and the titanium plate 20, respectively. Brine is supplied through an inlet 18 and the liquor removed through an outlet 28 in a cover 26. Gas is removed at 27. The cover is corrosion resistant and may be of plastic or titanium or glass-lined steel. Cooling water may be circulated through double walls 14, 15 of the container. Several cells may be connected electrically in series.
