Abstract
904,820. Compressors. GARRETT CORPORATION. Jan. 18, 1960 [Jan. 19, 1959], No. 1805/60. Class 8(1). A two stage, reciprocating compressor has pistons 10, 11 mounted on and, engaged with, a central driving shaft 32, positive rotary drive being provided by balls 46 in splined grooves, allowing the pistons 10 and 11 limited axial movement. The pistons 10 and 11 have helical cam grooves 16 and 17 which engage with cams 18 and 20 secured to the body of the compressor such that when the driving shaft 32 rotates the two pistons 10 and 11 reciprocate in antiphase with each other; the space 75 between them acting as the first compressive stage and the space 76 on the remote side of the smaller piston 11 acting as the second compressive stage. As the pistons 10 and 11 move apart the suction created in the space 75 opens the check valve 72 on the piston 10 and draws in air from the atmosphere by way of the filtered inlet 77 and the channels 78 in the piston 10. During the compression stroke, as the pistons approach each other, a part of the air is forced along channels 79 in the body 3, opening the check valve 70 and discharges into the space 76, aided by the second stage suction stroke of piston 11, which closes the check valve 71. On the compression stroke of piston 11 the check valve 70 is closed and the air pressure in the space 76 acting through the holes 67 in the valve plate 63 opens the check valve 71, allowing the second stage air to pass through to the discharge connection 80. The pistons and shaft assembly are cooled by two separate systems. The ante chamber 81 to piston 10 alternately draws in and expels air from and to the atmosphere through the air shafts 82, holes 85, 86, the hollow shaft 42, holes 88, the annular channel 90 and the holes 91. The piston 11 has in internal space 93 formed between its head and that of the shaft 42 performing the same function as the chamber 81; air passing to and from the atmosphere into and out of holes 94 in the casing 3 by way of holes, 92 in the piston 11.
