904,498. Making heat-exchangers; soldering. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. Feb. 8, 1960, No. 4433/60. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XIII] In the making of a heat-exchanger consisting of tubes 44 extending between header tanks, each of which comprises a one-piece body section 19 having a flat base formed with flanged openings 40 therein to receive the tubes, a method of construction comprises the steps of providing in a longitudinally-extending zone 39 of a strip of sheet copper, brass, aluminium or other metal (i.e. the sheet used to form the header), a coating of a low-melting point metal such as a tin or lead solder or zinc, forming in said strip one or more of the flanged openings 40 having said metal coatings on the inner surface thereof, and dimensioned snugly to receive a tube, and heating the assembly (e.g. in an oven or by means of a torch or by passage across fixed flames) to thus melt the coatings and effect a bond between the strip and the tube or tubes. The coating may comprise a strip of foil 38 rolled into the body of the parent strip 19 as shown in Fig. 6 or the strip 38 may be applied so that it protrudes beyond the strip 19. In the form shown, each of the tubes 44 is also provided with a coating 56 of the low-melting point metal. Recesses 50, 52 are formed in the base zone to provide reservoirs for excess solder and to impart rigidity. In forming the header the body section strip 19 is bent to U-shape with flanged edges formed before or after bending, and the limbs of the U-section are then bent so that the flanges 30, 32 can be welded together. The body section is finally closed by soldered or welded-in end plates 34.
