Abstract
904,142. Generating combustion products under pressure. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. April 7, 1960 [April 17, 1959], No. 13273/59. Class 51(1). [Also in Group XXVI] Combustion equipment for a gas turbine engine comprises means to introduce a coolant liquid into the combustion space both at the primary air inlet to the combustion space and simultaneously at a point between the primary air inlet and the combustion gas outlet. The combustion equipment shown comprises an annular air casing, formed by an outer wall 10 and an inner wall 13 having a ring of flame tubes disposed therein, each flame tube having a primary air inlet passage 20 and a fuel injector 23 at its upstream end and a combustion gas outlet 25 at its downstream end. Coolant liquid such as water or water-methanol is introduced into the flame tubes by means of spray devices 32 disposed within the air diffuser section 11, 14 one upstream of each primary air inlet passage 20, and by means of further spray devices 34 mounted on the outer air casing wall 10, one between each adjacent pair of flame tubes and spraying coolant liquid into the flame tubes through the air inlet openings 22 therein. The coolant spray devices 32 and 34 are connected by branches 31 and 33 respectively to a supply manifold 30. The combustion equipment may alternatively be of the kind comprising an annular flame tube disposed within an annular air casing, or a series of flame tubes each disposed within its own air casing.
