Abstract
893,016. Mixing fluids. FRASER, R. P., and FURMAN, G. T. June 23, 1960 [June, 25, 1959], No. 21840/59. Class 86. [Also in Group XII] In a method and apparatus for mixing fluids introduced under pressure into a mixing chamber the first fluid is dispersed conically as at A by a device 4 which may be a pressure atomizer. The second fluid is introduced by an annular passage 6, (or by a circular group of nozzles or apertures) and flows in counterdirection to A in an inwardly convergent annular stream B. The streams A, B and the chamber wall 1 have substantially the same conicity, and the distance between the streams is slightly less than the radius of the chamber. A vortex in the form of a toroidal ring is formed at C, mixture from the vortex being forced out of the exit duct 5. If the atomizer 4 imparts a whirling reaction to the stream A, the vortex C will rotate like a wheel. The cone angles of the streams A, B may be 45 to 120 degrees, and the length to breadth or diameter ratio of the chamber may be 0À5 to 2À0. One of the fluid streams may be a fuel and the other a supporter of combustion and the invention is primarily directed to the provision of combustion chambers having an output in excess of one million BTU per cubic foot per hour. In a modification, Fig. 2, an additional cylindrical annular stream B2 flows in the same direction as stream A, and a stream D flows radially inwards, to effect cooling of the chamber walls when it is used as a combustion chamber. A secondary mixing vortex C1 is formed in this case.
