Abstract

892,984. Rollers; impregnated, coated and laminated paper. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. July 8, 1958 [July 8, 1957], No. 21936/58. Classes 42 (2) and 96. [Also in Groups XVI and XXIV] A removable sleeve for covering a dampening roll in a lithographic printing press comprises a non-stretchable tubular body having a surface layer comprising a combination of waterreceptive fibres in a cohesive mat and a waterreceptive elastomer dispersed in the mat. As shown, the sleeve comprises a tubular inner layer 14 formed of a spirally wrapped sheet to which is laminated an outer reversely spirally wrapped sheet 12 by means of an adhesive layer 16. The sheet 12 may be of kraft paper impregnated with from 10 to 75% by weight of an elastomer such as neoprene or a copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile. Natural or synthetic rubber, fluorinated acrylate rubbers or plasticized 1,2-epoxides may also be used as the elastomer and the fibres may be any natural or synthetic, woven, unwoven or randomly disposed, water-absorbent fibres, e.g. natural cellulose fibres or certain of the nylons. The layer 14 may be of similar material to the sheet 12, but may also be of paper stock, reticulated metal, plastic such as polytetrafluoroethylene or polyethylene, or other material which provides a stiff, shape-retaining core. The adhesive layer 16 is formed by coating the adjacent faces of the layers 14, 12 with a synthetic rubber-phenolic resin based, waterproof, non-migrating, highstrength adhesive, which is dried to a non-tacky state and activated by a solvent such as ethyl acetate when the faces are brought into contact. The sleeve is formed on a mandrel and has an internal, diameter slightly smaller than the external diameter of the roller 18 which it is to cover. The roller has a resilient body 22 which is contracted by subjecting it to a low temperature, the sleeve then being slipped over the roller and being frictionally held thereon when the body 22 expands on its return to room temperature. In modifications the sleeve may consist of three or more laminµ which may have seams parallel to the axis of the roller and the surfacing sheet may be parchmentised on one or both sides by immersion in a 70% sulphuric acid solution.
