Abstract

A compound containing an epoxide is purified by treating the compound with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal borohydride of the formula M(BH4)n, M(BH3X)n, M(BH2X2)n or M(BHX3)n where M represents the metal, n the valency and X represents an alkyl, aryl, alkoxy group or halogen atom. The preferred epoxides are alkylene oxides, e.g. ethylene oxide or styrene oxide, particularly those containing less than eight carbon atoms per molecule, but other epoxy compounds such as epichlorohydrin, glycidic acid, glycide and other a ,b -epoxy carboxylic acids or alcohols may be purified. More rapid removal of impurities is obtained if the borohydride is dissolved in water. The epoxide may be pre-treated with a drying agent, e.g. calcium hydride or alumina, batchwise or continuously. The purification may be effected batchwise by passing the epoxide into a tank where it is treated with borohydride and then distilling off the epoxide. In a continuous process, the borohydride is injected into a column tray of a distillation column in which the epoxide is submitted to continuous distillation. Alternatively, the borohydride may be injected into the top of a distillation column, a time tank or similar device being incorporated to increase the contact time.
