Abstract
A moulded thermal insulating material comprises 45-94% expanded cellular perlite, 5-20% montmorillonitic clay as primary binder, 1-20% organic binder which is resistant to boiling water 0-15% fibre. The secondary organic binder may be polyvinyl acetate, or emulsified asphalt, or it may be of a type which is not water resistant per se, such as polyvinyl alcohol, an acrylic polymer, or a carboxy methyl cellulose, or starch, which has been rendered resistant to boiling water by the addition of 0,2-1% of silicone (organic silicon oxide polymer). The clay may be bentonite, and the fibres may be asbestos or any animal, mineral or vegetable fibre. A mixture of the materials is moulded at 20-60 p.s.i. and dried at 225 DEG F-400 DEG F.
