Abstract
891,433. Electromagnetic switches. DONLAN ELECTRONICS Inc. Feb. 18, 1960 [April 2, 1959], No. 5865/60. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XL (b)] A waveguide switch comprises a block 10 of triangular section having within it three waveguide passages intersecting at 120 degrees and an obturating vane 27 mounted on a rotatable shaft 28. The shaft is normally biased to a position in which the vane closes one of the passages 19, 20 and is actuated to open this passage and close the other one by means of a solenoid 43, Fig. 3. The shaft 28 is coupled by means of toothed wheels 31, 34 to an insulated shaft 38 which carries a solenoid plunger 35 and a helical biasing spring 46. Rotary motion is imparted to the plunger 35 and shaft 38 by means of a spiral groove 36 which engages lands 37 on the solenoid body. When the solenoid is energized, the plunger rises from its lower (biased) position and shaft 38 engages a reed-type contact arm 39 which normally forms a short-circuit around a resistor 42 arranged in series with the solenoid. The resistor limits the current in the solenoid to a value which is just sufficient to hold the plunger in the upper position.
