890,861. Coloured photographic image protection and products therefor. INTERNATIONAL POLAROID CORPORATION. Dec. 15, 1959 [Jan. 14, 1959], No. 42635/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 98(2). A coloured image made in an image receiving element by diffusion-transfer from an imagewise distribution of colour-providing substances formed in an exposed photosensitive element is protected from the adverse effects of ultraviolet light by incorporation of at least one ultraviolet absorbent compound in the receiving element before or during formation of such image. Preferably the transfer is effected through a layer of an alkali permeable polymer containing the ultraviolet absorbent compound to a dyeable image receiving layer, and in a product for use in -this method the latter layer, on a support, is covered by the polymer layer which however, has a lower affinity for the colour providing substances than the imagereceiving layer. In an example this polymer layer comprises cellulose acetate hydrogen phthalate with cellulose acetate itself and 5- benzilidene - 3 - hexadecyl - 2 - phenylimino-4- thiazolidone as of Specification 748,190 as ultraviolet absorber, and a magenta image is produced in the underlying receiving layer by dye-developer technique. Other ultraviolet absorbers are indicated by a structural formula. Numerous alternative manners of procedure are described, and other products include such having a transparent image receiving layer and a transparent film support with the ultraviolet absorbing substance distributed therein; and having a silver halide emulsion containing colour-providing substances, and a rupturable container of processing solution as well as the image-receiving element. A product comprising a silver halide emulsion containing colour-providing substances and a separate alkali-permeable layer containing an ultraviolet absorbing substance soluble in aqueous alkaline processing solution may be used in the method.
