Abstract

898,976. Disintegrating apparatus; pneumatic separating. SCOTT & SON (LONDON) Ltd., GEORGE. Sept. 30, 1958 [Oct. 11, 1957], No. 31871/57. Classes 59 and 117. [Also in Group XXX] Apparatus for reducing materials comprises a container of generally circular internal contour as regards any cross-section of the container perpendicular to the vertical central axis thereof, a rotor disposed adjacent one end of the container with its axis of rotation coincident with the vertical central axis of the container and adapted to reduce material introduced into the container and to propel it along the side wall of the container for directing the material so propelled from the side wall of the container first towards the vertical central axis of the container and then back towards the rotor, and circumferentially spaced ribs projecting from the side wall of the container into the interior space of the container and extending upwardly of the container from the region therein of operation of the rotor. As shown in Fig. 1, a container 10 is provided at the lower end thereof with a rotor 21 comprising a disc 22 mounted on a motor-driven shaft 17 and provided with pivotally-mounted hammers 23. The container is provided at its other end with a stopper 28 having curved surfaces 29 for deflecting the material being reduced back along the axis of rotation of the container towards the rotor. The container has spaced circumferential ribs 26, 27 and is pivotally mounted about a shaft 34 so that it can be tilted from a vertical to a horizontal position. On a modification, Fig. 2, the container 40 has a vertically-adjustable inlet conduit 43 for air and the material to be reduced, the conduit 43 being disposed within a concentric conduit 41 connecting with an outlet conduit 42. The conduit 42 may be connected to pneumatic separating means, Fig. 3, which comprises a conduit 47 which is provided with branch conduits 48 to 52, the coarsest fraction being delivered through the conduit 48 and the finest fraction through the conduit 52. In another modification, Fig. 4, the rotor 58 is also provided with cutter blades 79. The feed hopper 66 has an outlet passage 67 closed by valve means 80, 80a. The container 56 has an outlet 69 provided with a screen 71 which is closed by a retractable piston 74. In a further modification, Fig. 5, the rotor 86 is provided with a single blade 87 and one or more ribs 87a and the side wall of the container 81 has ribs 88. The container has a feed hopper 83 of resilient material, the lower portion 83a of which is flattened to form a seal. In a still further modification, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), the upper section of the container is interchangeable for another of different size for varying the capacity of the apparatus.
