Abstract

898,165. Universal joints. GEWERKSCHAFT EISENHUTTE WESTFALIA. Jan. 19, 1959 [Jan. 31, 1958], No. 1927/59. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXX] In a double-chain scraper conveyer the two scraper-carrying chains are driven by two coaxially arranged sprocket wheels 14, 15 which are mounted on separate sleeves 24, 29 in turn secured to separate stub-shafts 25, 30, and a tubular drum 16 drivingly connects the sprocket wheels for synchronous rotation by dog-clutch elements 36, 37 at its ends engaging corresponding elements 34, 35 on the facing ends of the sleeves 24, 29. To allow for the stub-shafts being out of line or at an angle to each other the drum is supported on the facing ends of the sleeves 24, 29 by chamfered portions 40, 41 of concave shape on the drum, so as to form a universal joint at each end of the drum. One or both of the stub-shafts 25, 30 comprise output shafts of separate drive transmissions on opposite sides of the conveyer frame 23, each transmission being driven by a separate motor through a fluid coupling, clutch and gear-box. The gearbox casings 27, 32 are mounted on the frame 23 to cover apertures 28 large enough to receive the sprocket wheels during assembly. Where only one stub-shaft is driven, the other stub-shaft is carried by a blind flange which covers the respective aperture 28. The drum 16 may be composed of two or more part-cylindrical shells secured together.
