Abstract

Selective ion-exchange membranes are obtained by introducing ionic groups with a dissociation constant of at least 10-5 in an amount of at least 0,15 milliequivalents per gram of membrane to a solid polyalkylene polymer base material obtained as described in Specification 896,739. The membranes which may be in the form of sheets or tubes may be used in electrodialysis processes for the treatment of fluids, and the removal of mineral components from aqueous solutions. Specification 778,001 also is referred to.
