Abstract
896,482. Stuffing-box substitutes. MURRAY, W. Sept. 2, 1958, No. 38817/60. Divided out of 896,481. Class 122 (5). The shaft 5 of a centrifugal pump is sealed below a predetermined speed by a contact seal comprising an axially movable sealing-member urged as by springs 10 against a collar 6 on the shaft and sealed to the pump casing 17 by an 0-ring 21 free to roll between the outer periphery of the member and a bore in the casing. The member comprises a sealing-ring 22 fixed to a flanged sleeve 18 secured to the hub 20 of a disc 9 having a face 9a which when the shaft runs at or above the predetermined speed is subjected to liquid pressure sufficient to overcome the force of the springs 10 and move the member to separate ring 22 from sealing contact with collar 6. The shaft is then sealed by a liquid such as described and claimed in Specification 896,481.
