Abstract

896,182. Electrostatic precipitators. DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT VORM ROESSLER. Nov. 28, 1958 [Nov. 29, 1957; Sept. 6, 1958], No. 38494/58. Class 39(1). In separating carbon black from a carrier gas, course separation takes place in two cycles 12, 14 before the gas, now containing 4 to 10 g/m<SP>3</SP> of carbon, is passed by a fan 16 into a cyclone 17 provided with earthed tubular electrodes 18 and wire electrodes (not shown). A.C. or D.C. may be used for charging the carbon black particles in the cyclone 17, the resulting groups of particles being separated out in a further cyclone 20. The remaining carbon black particles are carried by the gas into one or other of two chambers 21a, 21b where charged plate electrodes 22 attract more of the carbon black particles; before passing into a chamber 21 the particles may be charged by wire electrodes in a chamber 23a or pipe 27. Some of the gas flowing through an outlet pipe 24 is diverted by means of a fan 29 into the upper part of the chamber 21 to remove the carbon black from the plates 22 and into a pipe 26 which serves to remove the carbon black collected in the cyclones and the chamber 21. The electrodes may be vibrated or tapped to assist in removing particles. In a modification, Fig. 3, a pipe section 67 is used in place of the cyclone 17.
