Abstract

Crude dark-coloured fatty acid amides of chain length of 6 to 26 carbon atoms are purified by treating the molten amides or mixtures thereof with an oxygen-yielding substance at temperatures above 100 DEG C., preferably about 20 DEG C. above the melting point of the amides or their mixtures, with stirring. The nitrogen atom of the amides may be substituted by C1-6 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl. Specified oxygen-yielding substances are hydrogen peroxide, performic acid, peracetic acid and metal persulphates, percarbonates and peroxides. Preferably not more than 1%-5% referred to the weight of the amide is used.
