Abstract
883,644. Pneumatic tyres. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. Dec. 10, 1959, No. 42026/59. Class 144 (2). In a chafer strip for tubeless tyres comprising an open-woven fabric of air-impervious abrasion resistant monofilaments 41, 42 of nylon or synthetic resinous polymer, the filaments are flattened at their points of intersection, whilst retaining an overall thickness greater than either of the individual filaments, to provide enlarged bearing surfaces both against each other and on each face of the fabric. Such a construction is said to increase the abrasion resistance of the fabric. The flattening may be effected by hot calendering the fabric immediately after weaving or by pressing between hot plates. Alternatively, the filaments may be shaped before weaving. Suitable materials for the filaments include vinyl resins and polyester resins, and the monofilaments may range from 0.010 inch to 0.060 inch gauge. The fabric may be square woven with a cord count of from 8 x 8 to 50 x 50. Specification 737,760 is referred to.
