Abstract

882,713. Matches. INLAND N.V. June 27, 1958 [July 13, 1957; Aug. 23, 1957; Dec. 11, 1957 (2)], No. 20769/58. Class 50. [Also in Group XVII] A match consists of a splint composed of at least one covering of combustible material and at least one core also made at least partly of combustible material, and an inflammable ignition head at one end of the splint. The covering preferably consists of a tube, shell or similar hollow object of paper, cellulose acetate, polyamide, polyvinyl chloride, polyurethane, polyethylene, polystyrene, wood pulp, wood fibres, wood powder, sawdust, wood grindings, paper pulp, ground flax fibres, straw, rapeseed leaves, stems of plants or wood veneer into which the core material is introduced. Alternatively, the covering on the core may be formed by dipping, sprinkling, spraying, extruding, or gluing, and the covering may have round, triangular, square, rectangular, polygonal, or oval cross-section. The covering materials may be bound with agglutinants, such as glue or starch, to which fillers, e.g. zinc oxide, glass powder, chalk, gypsum, asbestos, or charcoal, are added. Other substances which may be added include paraffin wax, fats, resins, e.g. colophony or shellac, borax, phosphoric acid, potassium chlorate, ammonium phosphate, strontium nitrate, finelyground tobacco, chlorophyll, perfume, and aromatic, luminescent, air-purifying and reflecting substances, and colourants. The core, which may be solid or hollow, may consist of any of the above substances bound by agglutinants. If desired, the covering may be provided with an ornamental layer, and different portions of the core may be coloured differently. Furthermore, the first core portion may contain a high proportion of colophony, shellac, or potassium chlorate so that the match cannot be blown out in a gale. It is preferred that the portion of the core at the end remote from the head be comprised of non-combustible material so that the match extinguishes itself without burning the user's fingers. As shown in Figs. 9 and 10, matches which can be used repeatedly may be produced by arranging that the core slides within the cover; the core in this case comprises successive bands of ignition material 10, combustible material 11, and non- combustible material 12. After initial use, the core is pressed out as shown in Fig. 10 by compressing the splint at the end remote from the head, whereupon ignition material 10 is once again exposed and the match ready for further use. As shown in Fig. 11, double-ended matches having heads 3, cover 1 and cores 2 may be produced; several such matches when folded at the centre may suitably be formed into match cards (for embodiments of match cards comprising matches according to the invention, see Group XVII). The matches may be produced by using the devices shown in Figs. 13 and 14; the dies 16 and 17 are heated by elements 21, and between them are placed two sheets of thermoplastic material 19 separated by a layer of core material 20. When dies 16 and 17 are brought together, separate splints are formed which are subsequently provided with heads. As shown in Fig. 7, the heads may be provided by pressing a pill 6 of the ignition material, while still in plastic condition, on to the end of the splint, with or without the use of adhesive, and then allowing the head to harden. Strips of matches as shown in Fig. 18, suitable for incorporation into match cards, may be produced by the use of a pair of dies as shown in Fig. 15, strip 24 being produced by the pressure of the ungrooved portion 25 of the die. The matches may also be produced by the devices shown in Figs. 16 and 17. In Fig. 16, a grooved mould 16 heated by elements 21 is provided with knives 26 separated by grooves 18 for cutting through sheets of material fed between the mould 16 and heated or unheated ungrooved roller 34, while in Fig. 17, films or sheets of material are passed between grooved rollers 30 and 31, each roller containing an ungrooved portion 33 to form the strip to which matches suitable for incorporation into match cards are attached. Specification 862,932 is referred to.
