Abstract

Cellulose textile materials are dyed or printed from an aqueous medium with a water-soluble azo dyestuff of the formula <FORM:0882001/IV (c)/1> wherein E represents the residue of a coupling component which contains one or more water solubilising groups, such as sulphamyl, carboxylic acid or sulphonic acid groups, and m and n each represent 1 or 2 and may be the same or different, the materials also being treated, before, during or after the application of the dyestuff, with an alkali, and subsequently heated or steamed. Specified alkalis are sodium or potassium hydroxide, an alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide, sodium or potassium carbonate or bicarbonate, di- or tri-sodium phosphate, sodium borate and sodium silicate. The dyebath may contain the usual adjuvants such as urea, nonionic or anionic wetting agents, glaubers salt, common salt and sodium alginate. The printing paste may contain sodium-m-nitrobenzene sulphonate and thickeners, such as starch, British gum, gum tragacanth, cellulose ethers, sodium alginate or the emulsion thickeners of Specification 524,803. When applied separately, the alkali is applied from an aqueous solution which may also contain sodium chloride, sodium sulphate or potassium chloride. When the dyestuff contains diazotisable, aromatic hydroxyl or keto-enol groups or metallisable systems, the coloured material may be subsequently subjected to diazotisation and coupling, or coupling, or metallisation. The dyestuffs are made by diazotising, for example, 2 : 4-dichloro-2 : 4-dibromo-or 2 : 4-difluoro-5-nitroaniline or 3 : 5-dinitro-4-chloroaniline and coupling with a phenol, naphthol, acylacetarylide, para-coupling arylamine, 5-aminopyrazole, 5-pyrazolone or an arylazo compound, containing one or more solubilising groups, and when a para-coupling arylamine is so-employed, the resulting monoazo dyestuff may be diazotised and coupled with a coupling component. In examples, the dyestuff employed is 1-amino-7-(21 : 41-difluoro-51-nitrophenylazo) - 8 - naphthol - 3 : 6 - disulphonic acid. The Provisional Specification refers also to the use, in general, of dyestuffs of the azo, anthraquinone, o-nitro-diarylamine and phthalocyanine series containing a halogenophenyl radical in which the halogen radical is activated by the presence of at least one electronegative group such as a trifluoromethyl, sulphonic acid, fluorosulphonyl, sulphamyl, sulphonic ester, aliphatic or aromatic sulphonyl, carboxylic acid, carboxylic ester, amide, nitrile, keto or nitro group.
