Abstract

888,117. Variable - speed gear ; friction Clutches. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. April 28, 1959 [May 2, 1958], No. 14477/59. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXIV] Variable-speed gearing for motor cars &c., giving four forward ratios and one reverse ratio, comprises a fluid coupling 10 or an hydrodynamic torque converter driving through a shaft 18 to a drum 19 constituting the driving- member of two disc clutches 21, 22, engagement of the clutch 21 transmitting drive through a connecting member 24 to an intermediate shaft 12 integral with two sun-gears 26, 27, the latter meshing planet pinions on a carrier 46, fast with an output shaft 47, forming a planetary gear train 14 having a ring gear 42 stationed for first speed by application of a disc brake 41. By releasing the brake 41 and instead applying a disc brake 35 to station a sleeve 36 fast with a ring gear 37 meshed by planet pinions also meshing the sun-gear 26 and mounted upon a carrier 43 fast with the ring-gear 42, the gears 26 &c. constituting a second gear train 13, a second forward ratio is obtained. On releasing the brake 35 and applying a disc brake 34 to station a sun-gear 29 journalled upon the intermediate shaft 12 and forming part of a third gear-train 12 having planet pinions meshing a ring-gear 44 fast with the planet carrier of a second train 13, a third forward ratio is established. On releasing the brake 34 and instead engaging the clutch 22, which connects the driving drum 19 to the sun-gear 29 of the third gear train 12, direct drive is obtained. For reverse, the clutch 21 is released, the clutch 22 is engaged and the brake 41 is engaged to station the ring gear 42 of the first gear train 14, drive then passing through all three of the planetary gear trains 12 ... 14. The clutch 21 is a single disc clutch, and the number of discs in the clutch and the brakes 22, 34, 35, 41 is determined by the load imposed thereon. The clutch 21 is engaged when fluid under pressure is admitted to act upon a ring-shaped piston 48, and the clutch 22 is engaged when fluid under pressure is admitted to act upon a ring-shaped piston 31. The brakes 34, 35, 41 are engaged when fluid under pressure is admitted to act upon associated ring-shaped pistons.
