Abstract

Compounds having the formula <FORM:0887360/IV (b)/1> in which R is an alkyl radical having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms or the radical <FORM:0887360/IV (b)/2> are made by heating 5-hydroxymethyl furfural alone or with an alkanol having 1-8 carbon atoms in the molecule in the presence of an acid catalyst, the effect of the water formed being controlled either by continuously removing it or by using a large excess of alkanol. Suitable catalysts are, for example, p-toluene sulphonic acid, sulphuric acid, a sulphonated ion-exchange resin, hydrogen chloride or zinc chloride.
