Abstract

In thermally cracking cycle oils to produce alkenes the cycle oil is catalytically hydrogenated to remove olefines and/or sulphur compounds and solvent extracted to remove aromatics, the reffinate being cracked. Hydrogenation may be at 370 DEG -430 DEG C., 600-1,500 p.s.i.g., 0,5-4 vol./vol./hr. with 1,000-4,000 ScF of hydrogen per barrel over cobalt and molybdenum oxides, or tungsten and nickel oxides or sulphides. The solvent for extraction may be furfural, sulphur dioxide, glycols with or without water or phenol and water. Thermal cracking is preferably in the presence of steam at 500 DEG -670 DEG C. for a few seconds. Specification 783,469 is referred to.
