Abstract
885,415. Hauling and stopping chains. BLUNDELL & CROMPTON Ltd., and CROMPTON, H. E. July 21, 1960 [April 21, 1959], No. 13605/59. Class 78 (2). A chain or cable manipulating mechanism comprises a base member 11 on which is oscillatably mounted a chain or cable supporting element 15 which carries a chain manipulating member 33 having limited pivotal movement. The member 33 has a portion 35 which engages the chain or cable when the member 33 is swung towards one limit of its movement. Continued movement of the member 33 in the same direction then imparts movement both to the chain or cable 18 and the supporting element 15. A one-way gripping device 28 is mounted on the base member 11 so as to be movable into contact with the chain or cable 18. Thus during the movement of the member 33 the chain may be drawn passed the device 28, but upon reversal of movement the chain is arrested. As shown, applied to the raising and lowering of an anchor chain for a small boat, the device 28 comprises a pawl which can be held to prevent the movement of the chain 18 in both directions by the insertion of a pin at 29. The member 33 is pivotally mounted at 37 on the element 15 and has a pawl 38 which may be engageable with a tooth 39 formed on the element 15. The chain engaging portion of the member 33 comprises a projection 35 which co-operates, in the released position of the pawl 38, and on swinging of the member 33 to the right, with a corresponding projection 47 formed on the element 15. By this means further movement of the member 33 to the right moves both the element 15 and the chain. A surface 44 carries the chain clear of the projection 47 before it passes through an outlet aperture 36 in the member 11. The member 33 is then moved in the reverse direction and the pawl 38 engages the tooth 39 so as to return the element 15 to its previous position. When it is desired to lower the anchor, the pawl 28 is swung out of engagement with the chain and the element 15 is secured in its extreme rightward position by means of a pin 40 passing through the member 11 and the element 15. The member 33 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 1 in which the pawl 38 is disengaged from the stop 39 and a part 34 is brought to bear frictionally upon the chain so as to control by pressure on the member 33, the running out speed of the chain. The member 33 may be remotely operated by means of a cord.
