Abstract

The invention comprises steroid compounds of the general formula <FORM:0884571/IV (b)/1> wherein R represents hydrogen or a lower alkly or a (lower alkyl)-CO-group, and R1 represents hydrogen or a (lower alkyl)-CO-group (the expression lower alkyl herein means an alkyl group containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms). The compounds may be prepared (a) by treating 18,20 - epoxy - 4,20 - pregnadiene - 3 - one with osmium tetroxide to form a mixture of 18,20-epoxy-20(a and b ),21-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-ones and either acylating these compounds to form the 21-monoesters or etherifying these compounds to form the 20-monoethers; (b) by treating 18,20 - epoxy - 4,20 - pregnadien - 3 - one with a lead tetra-alkanoate to form the 20,21-diesters and selectively hydrolysing, e.g. by treating with acid under mild conditions, the 20,21-diesters to form the 20-monoesters; and by etherifying the 18,20-epoxy-20-hydroxy-21-acyloxy-4-pregnen-3 - ones or by acylating with alkanoic anhydrides the 18,20 - epoxy - 20 - alkoxy - 21 - hydroxy - 4 - pregnen-3-ones in each case the 20-ethers-21-esters are formed.
