Abstract
873,532. Wheel rims. SANKEY-BENSON WHEELS PTY. Ltd. Nov. 9, 1959 [Nov. 18, 1958], No. 37855/59. Class 144 (2). In a divisible wheel rim comprising a cylindrical rim base 8 of uniform thickness and rolled from metal plate to provide a circumferential gutter 6 at one edge to receive a split locking ring 16 serving to retain a detachable endless skirted tyre bead retaining flange 12, the gutter edge of the rim base terminates in a radially inwardly directed flange 7 defining a radially inwardly facing channel in which a reinforcing hoop ring 9 is welded. As shown, the locking-ring 16 is of crescent section to engage snugly in the gutter 6 and against the rounded junction of the flange 12 with its skirt 14. The edge of the rim base opposite the gutter 6 may have a radially outwardly extending stop flange 5 to which is welded a skirted bead-retaining flange ring 11 identical in form with the flange ring 12. Alternatively, the rim base edge may be formed as an integral flange 22, Fig. 2, which is reinforced by a hoop ring 23 as shown, or by an angle-section ring. Stiffening grooves 10 may be formed in the rim base. For use with a tubular tyre, circumferential channels 15 may be machined in the inner periphery of the skirt 14 (17) of the or each flange ring 12 (11), the channels being filled with a plastic sealing compound via nipples 21 in the rim base.
