Abstract
The invention comprises optically active forms of compounds of the general formula <FORM:0873316/IV (b)/1> (wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom or a C1-C5 alkyl group and R2 a hydrogen atom or a C1-C4 alkyl group, and wherein the asymmetric carbon atom is marked +) and certain of their acid addition salts, and the preparation thereof by resolving the corresponding racemic compounds with the aid of optically active acids, or (when neither R1 nor R2 represents a hydrogen atom) by reacting a phenthiazine of the general formula <FORM:0873316/IV (b)/2> (wherein R11 represents a C1-C5 alky group) with an optically active piperidine derivative of the general formula <FORM:0873316/IV (b)/3> (wherein R12 represents a C1-C4 alky group). The products are useful as spasmolytic, histaminolytic, sympathicolytic, adrenolytic and sedative agents and as potentiators of anaesthetics, the (+)-isomers being stronger but the (-)-isomers more specific in their action. Optically active piperidine halides of the third general formula above are prepared by the action of halogenating agents on the corresponding optically active piperidine alcohols obtained by resolution of the racemic forms thereof.
