Abstract

873,146. Automatic fluid flow control systems. SPE CO. Ltd. Jan. 14, 1958 [Jan. 14, 1957; July 29, 1957], Nos. 1401/57 and 24007/57. Class 38 (4). In a system for maintaining rates of fluid flow in a desired ratio, electrical pulses corresponding in frequency to the rates of flow operate step by step motors coupled through adjustable speed gearing to driven members which get out of step and operate means to control fluid flow and restore the desired ratio automatically, should it deviate. In Fig. 1 fuel is pumped from each of three aircraft fuel tanks 10, 11, 12 by pumps 13 through conduits 14 having electric motor-operated control valves 15, non-return valves 16, and flow measuring units 17. The flow transducing units are of the type in which a rotor driven by the fuel flow carries a vane which periodically interrupts light falling on a photo-transistor or operates an electromagnetic device so that electrical pulses are produced having a frequency corresponding to the rate of flow. These pulses, amplified, operate step-bystep motors 20 rotating ratchet wheels 22 to positions corresponding to integrated rate of flow in each conduit 14. Ratchet wheels 22 drive further wheels 25 through variable-speed gears 24 which are set so that when the flows are in such ratios that the three tanks empty together there is no relative movement between the three wheels 25. If relative movements do occur, indicating errors in the flow ratios, reversing switches 65 are operated to run the motors of control valves 15 in the appropriate direction to correct the ratios. Ratio correction by controlling by-pass valves returning fuel to the tanks or by varying pump speeds is referred to. Counters and speed-responsive devices operated by the pulses or by ratchet wheels 22 and by a shaft 32 indicate individual and total flows and rates of flow respectively. An emergency pump may be started to replace a main pump by a switch responsive to failure of pressure in one of the conduits.
