Abstract

871,797. Finishing yarns. BRITISH CELANESE Ltd. Feb. 28, 1958 [March 1, 1957], No. 6876/57. Class 120(3) In a process for looping or bulking at least one multifilamentary yarn by subjection to a turbulent fluid stream e.g. as described in and/or using the apparatus of Specifications 790,911, 790,912, 790,913, 793,044, 871,798, the fluid is a hot (dry or moist) gas e.g. nitrogen or steam, at a temperature sufficiently high e.g. 120‹- 250 ‹C., to soften the filaments and thereby modify the loop formation i.e. produce deep waves or arches rather than complete rings and reduce the twist required to lock or consolidate the loops. The yarn may be twisted or untwisted assemblies of continuous filaments e.g. of polyhexamethylene adipamide, polyaminocaproic acid, polyethylene terephthalate, cellulose triacetate or acetone-soluble acetate. In the apparatus shown, a jet unit 10 comprises a T- piece 11 having a limb 13 connected to a steam heater 14 and a double limb 12 in which is fitted a member 15 accommodating rings 16 of packing material and housing a yarn inlet member 17, the tip 18 of which is of double-conical form, and a Venturi tube 20, external flanges of which abut the member 15 and are secured by screwed collars 24 and 25: steam, which may pass through a gauze collar 27, enters the limb 12 through holes 26. Yarn 29 is fed from a stationary or rotatable package 30 (or a package on a double-twist spindle) by rollers 31, 32, and is taken-up as it leaves tube 20 by rollers 33, 34 (driven and/or dimensioned to rotate at lower peripheral speed than rollers 31, 32) delivering the looped yarn 29a over a guide rod 35 to winding apparatus comprising driving-drum 36, cheese 37 and traverse guide 38. The looped yarn may be taken-up on a twisting spindle and yarns which have been passed through a single jet unit may subsequently be separated or remain a composite doubled yarn.
