A vehicle door latching mechanism comprises a U-shaped striker 2, Fig. 1, having a latch engaging abutment 1 adapted to be secured on the door post and a plate 15 carrying on a radial arm 9 a striker engaging roller 10 adapted for fixing to the door edge 5. The arm 9, which is formed with a safety catch 12, is rigidly mounted with a spring-loaded doubleended lever 13, Fig. 2, the upper end of which may be swung inwardly to move the roller 10 from the abutment 1 by a plunger 16 on actuation of a press-button 17 located on the external door panel 6. The lever may also be actuated to disengage the roller from the abutment by rotation of a cam surface 20, Fig. 3, which is mounted on the plate 15 and is rotatable by the movement of chain or line 21 operable from within the vehicle. This movement may be prevented as a safety measure by the locking of the cam through the engagement of a member 28, mounted thereon, and a catch 29 pivotally mounted on the door edge 5. Locking of the latching mechanism from within the vehicle is effected by depressing a rod 23 which, through an arm 24, removes the plunger 16 from any possible contact with the lever 13. Should the door be slammed in "door locked" position movement of the arm 9, as the roller runs up the striker preparatory to dropping behind the abutment 1, rotates the lever 13 such that a rod 25 connected thereto moves upwardly to actuate the arm 24 and thus the rod 23 to establish the unlocked condition. Upon closing the door, a projection 7, Fig. 4, on a locating member 4 mounted on the door edge 5 enters a recess 8 in the striker 2, this interengagement preventing dislodgement of door and door post should the vehicle crash.
