Abstract
879,036. Free piston engines. LICENTIA PATENT-VERWALTUNGS-G.m.b.H. July 23, 1958, No. 23722/58. Classes 7(1) and 7(2). A free piston engine comprises within a casing a cylinder forming a combustion chamber and two free pistons 10, 11 arranged within the combustion chamber cylinder for reciprocating movement in opposite directions and an induction system consisting at least of one magnet 14 or 15 and one coil 20 or 21 associated with each free piston so that the magnet is caused to move in unison with the associated piston whilst the coacting coil is stationary or the coil is caused to follow the movement of the associated piston whilst the coacting magnet is stationary, the coil associated with one free piston and the coil associated with the other free piston being wound and connected together in such a manner that the electromotive forces produced during operation act in opposite directions. As shown, the spacing between the turns decreases towards the central plane 36 of the engine. In Fig. 2 annular grooves receive separate coils so that distances 26 and 27 respectively remain between two adjacent coils. The coils 32, 33 are connected in series and also each two following coils. Altogether there are five closed electric circuits. The coils may be mounted for movement and the magnets may be stationary. The working pistons themselves may be formed by magnets or may include magnets. Each working piston may be, for instance, surrounded by a cylindrical sleeve which forms a magnet. The magnets may be formed by coils through which direct current flows. The invention is applicable to a free piston gas generator or a free piston compressor.
