[Also in Group XV] Decorative glass laminates are produced by adhesively laminating together two glass sheets of normal impact resistance or two sheets of another transparent or translucent material which will not crack under normal impact, e.g. a polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate, a polyester, or a polyalkylene, with an intervening sheet of toughened glass, and thereafter generating cracks throughout the body of the toughened glass. The toughened glass interlayer may be exposed at some point and the generation of cracks induced by subjection of that point to impact or chipping. The adhesive may be an epoxide resin, a polyvinyl acetal, or a polyester, may contain a pigment or dye, and may be rendered more flexible by the addition of an organic polysulphide. Alternatively, transparent sheets of cellulose acetate or nylon may be interposed between the outer layers of the laminate and the sheet of toughened glass. Where the laminate is non-planar, the sheets may be shaped during manufacture and before cracking the toughened glass. In an example, two sheets of window glass are bonded to opposite sides of a sheet of toughened glass with a liquid epoxide resin containing triethylenetetramine and " Thiokol " (Registered Trade Mark) LP3. After assembly, the laminate was maintained at room temperature for 17 hours to allow the adhesive to cure, and the toughened glass is then chipped at an exposed edge. The laminate may contain additional layers.
