Abstract
Linear polysulphonamides containing unsubstituted and N-substituted sulphonamide groups, characterized in that at least half of the sulphonamide groups are N-substituted sulphonamide groups are made by reacting a disulphonyl halide with a mixture of diamines containing secondary diamines and at least one diamine having at least one primary amino group or by partial alkylation of a polysulphonamide wholly derived from a primary diamine with an alkyl halide or sulphate or a diazoalkane in the presence of a base. Many secondary diamines are specified. In the Examples (1) poly(hexamethylene benzene-p-disulphonamide) is partially alkylated by reaction with methyl iodide in solution in dimethyl formamide in the presence of silver oxide; (2) poly(hexamethylene benzene-p-disulphonamide) dissolved in aqueous caustic soda and acetone is partially alkylated by reaction with dimethyl sulphate; (3) benzene-p-disulphonamide is condensed with N-methylhexamethylene diamine, and N, N1-dimethyl hexamehtylene diamine in the presence of o-dichlorobenzene and aqueous sodium hydroxide and (4) butane-1 : 4-disulphonyl chloride is condensed with piperazine and hexamethylene diamine in the presence of o-dichlorobenzene and aqueous sodium hydroxide. The p products of the invention are soluble in concentrated sulphuric acid. Specifications 705,427, 856,310, 875,067, 875,068, 875,069, 875,070 and 875,071 are referred to.
