Abstract
In the production of filaments by extruding a solution of an aromatic polysulphonamide into an aqueous coagulating bath of acidity greater than that of the polymer solvent, the coagulating bath comprises an aqueous solution buffered to maintain a substantially constant pH, and the solvent is miscible in all proportions with the coagulating bath liquid. The latter preferably has a pH value of not less than about 5,0 and may be made from an aqueous solution of a weak organic acid in which is dissolved a salt of the acid with a strong base such as caustic soda. The polysulphonamides may be aromatic meta-or para-polysulphonamides prepared from meta-or para-disulphonic acids and diamines such as hexamethylene diamine. In an example, a 25% solution of polyhexamethylenebenzene-meta-disulphonamide in an aqueous solution of 200 grams per litre of caustic soda is spun into an aqueous solution of 100 grams per litre concentration of sodium bicarbonate at 65 DEG C. In another example, the polymer solution is spun into an aqueous solution of acetic acid and sodium acetate having a pH value of about 6,5. Specifications 875,067, 875,068, 875,070 and 875,071 are referred to.
