Abstract

863,636. Photo-electric devices. MEGATRON Ltd. June 3, 1957 [June 14, 1956], No. 18406/56. Class 37. A barrier-layer photo-electric cell of the type comprising a steel backing plate which may be protectively metal-coated, a selenium layer, and a thin transparent conductive layer having a sprayed metal electrode around its edge, has upon its radiation receiving surface a sheet of moisture-proof material, e.g. glass, mica, quartz or non-porous plastic, and the edges of the cell are sealed, or the whole cell is dip-coated in a sealing medium, e.g. ethyl cellulose in a volatile solvent. Spaces between the radiation receiving surface and the protective sheet are filled with a soft or softenable transparent material. such as paraffin oil, silicone grease or wax. The whole assembly may be further coated with a coldsetting epoxy resin; alternatively, the cell may be encased in or coated with resin after being provided with a protective sheet, or a layer of oil &c., or a dip-coating. A method of applying the resin is described. A glass plate may be embedded in the resin in front of the cell to increase transparency. The polar diagram of response of the cell may be modified by using a lens as the protective sheet, or by suitably moulding the resin; the response angle may be reduced by introducing a bundle of glass rods or an anglereducing grid into less transparent resin.
