Abstract
860,457. Measuring electrically. SULZER FRERES S.A. Jan. 9, 1959 [Nov. 7, 1958], No. 928/59. Class 40 (1). A device for measuring changes of diameter in a cylindrical vessel subject to internal pressure comprises two tubes 1, 2, one end of tube 1 being slidably located within one end of tube 2, and the other ends of both tubes being fastened, e.g. by welding, to diametrically-opposite points of the inside wall of the vessel under test, and a measuring cell 3, mounted on tube 1, containing a ring-shaped spring 4 which is deformed by relative movement between the tubes and which carries a strain gauge resistor 11. The ring 4 is fixed within the cell 3 by a bolt 5 and is fastened at a point opposite bolt 5 to a sensing-pin 8 which is urged by a coil-spring 7 against a bracket 9 on tube 2. The cell 3 is filled with an anti-corrosive insulating-liquid, and a diaphragm (not shown) extends across the cell and communicates with the pressure inside the vessel through openings in the outer wall of the cell. The strain gauge 11 is connected via leads 12, 13, in a D.C. measuring-circuit, e.g. a Wheatstone bridge, the power source, indicator, and other components of which are situated outside the vessel under test.
