Abstract
860,021. Spinning and finishing yarns. DEERING MILLIKEN RESEARCH CORPORATION. March 4, 1957 [March 2, 1956], No. 7185/57. Classes 120(2) and 120(3) In a method of combining continuous filament yarn with staple fibres e.g. roving or discontinuous groups, the yarn is led in frictional contact with a surface which is reciprocated in a direction transverse to the yarn path so that the filaments are spread apart transversely, then the staple fibre is inserted thereamong. The spreading may be assisted by electrostatic charges induced on the filaments by frictional contact with the reciprocating surface and/or associated guides. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, filamentary yarn 12, fed from a package 14 through guides 15, 17 and tension discs 16, is opened by a mechanism 18 and passed via a reciprocating guide 64 to the nip of rollers 28 where it merges with a roving of staple fibre fed from a bobbin 22, through a reciprocating trumpet guide 62, and drafted in a frame comprising back rollers 26, intermediate aprons and the (front) rollers 28, the combined filaments and fibre emerging from rollers 28 being twisted and wound on a bobbin 32. The mechanism 18 comprises a pin 42 (or eyelet) mounted on a bar 52 which is adjustably reciprocated, by a motor M driving through mechanism 56 comprising an eccentric cam and slotted yoke follower, within a stationary channel bar 50 carrying a pin 44 (or eyelet) and guide 40. The guides 62 and 64 are linked and slowly reciprocated by a cross-bar 66. As shown in Fig. 12, two pins 442, 443 mounted on a reciprocating rod 452 are so disposed that, at the mid-position of the reciprocation stroke, they present an open path for filament yarn between fixed guides 440 and 444. An alternative yarn opening mechanism 118, Fig. 6, comprises a disc 134 slidably mounted and held against axial movement beyond a set point on a reciprocating rod 138 by a slidably adjustable thrust collar 136 and faced by an adjustably spring-loaded disc 135 which is freely slidably mounted, with a bearing 139 on the rod 138, to a limit imposed by engagement of a stop flange 150 with a fixed bracket 146. In operation, the discs are open at one end of the rod travel (as shown), closed and under compression at the opposite end of the travel (Fig. 8) with the position of opening and closing of the discs being adjustable to occur at any intermediate point of the rod travel in order alternately to tension and relax the filaments. The operation of the discs is regulated by electromagnetic means in the apparatus 218 of Fig. 9 which comprises a disc 235 secured on a post 240 and faced by an adjustably spring-loaded disc 234 loosely fitted on the post 240 and caused to move from or permitted to close towards the disc 235 when a solenoid 262 is energized or de-energized, as determined by cyclic operation of a spring- controlled switch arm 276 following an eccentric cam 282. As shown in Fig. 10, an opening assembly 318 comprises relatively movable bars 334, 335, having serrated yarn engaging surfaces 336, 337. As shown in Fig. 16, yarn opening apparatus e.g. the mechanism 118, may cooperate with a device for maintaining the filaments in open relation comprising a bar 570 having a rough e.g. serrated, edge surface 572 and, with the guides 162, 164, driven by a cross-bar 166 in a slow reciprocating traverse motion. Specification 816,106 is referred to.
