Abstract
867,310. Nuclear fuel elements. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Oct. 6, 1959 [Oct. 8, 1958], No. 32153/58. Class 39(4). In a nuclear fuel can having external longitudinally extending fins projecting outwardly beyond helically shaped extended heat exchange surfaces, the fins are helically shaped in the opposite sense to the helices of the heat exchange surfaces and the lead of the fins along the length of the can is varied to vary the heat exchange characteristics in a manner tending to maintain a uniform temperature along the length of the can when in use. in Fig. 1 the fuel can is provided with helical ribs 6 forming heat exchange surfaces and with four fins 7 arranged helically in the opposite sense; the pitch of the helices formed by the fins 7 is smaller at each end of the can. In an alternative construction, Fig. 3 (not shown), the fins 7 run parallel to the axis of the can along the central part and are helical at each end.
