Abstract
866,841. Magnetic switches. TEDDING- TON AIRCRAFT CONTROLS Ltd. Dec. 4, 1959 [Dec. 5, 1958], No. 39313/58. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XVIII] In a float - operated switch having a contactcarrying permanent magnet repelled by a second permanent magnet on the float, a magnetic keeper between the magnets causes snap-action movement of the contact carrying magnet. The hollow float 4 is slidable in a perforated tube 3 secured to a body 1 threaded at 2 for securement in a tank. Flexible spiders 9 secured at their periphery by insulating rings 10 clamped to the body 1, carry a cylindrical magnet 8 which is coaxial with and opposed to the magnet 7 carried by the float. A contact ring 14 insulated from and carried by the magnet 8 cooperates with fixed contacts 15, 16, 17 on segments 18, 19 clamped to but insulated from the body 1. A sealed cover 20 encloses the contact chamber which is separated from the tube 3 by a wall 12 of the body 1 and by a thin saturable magnetic keeper 13. The magnet 8 is normally attracted to the keeper 13 and as the magnet 7 moves nearer to the keeper so that the gap between the keeper and magnet 7 becomes less than the gap between the keeper and the magnet 8 (dependent on the thickness of the wall 12), the magnet 8 is rapidly repelled upwards to close the contacts. When the magnet 7 is moved downwards the attraction between the magnet 8 and the keeper ensures rapid contact opening. A ballast chamber 6 on the float 4 may be weighted to set the operating level.
