Abstract

864,584. Two-part couplings. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 15, 1959 [Oct. 9, 1958], No. 32290/58. Class 38 (1). A socket connector for a printed circuit card comprises a body portion defining a card-receiving socket cavity, and at least one contact member constituted by a length of wire shaped into a form which provides a contact portion resiliently displaceable as a whole within the cavity and defines in said portion a plurality of resiliently interconnected contact sections by which to compliantly and tangentially engage a contact surface of an inserted printed card, the resilience being afforded by inherent resilience of the wire. In Fig. 1 a coil-spring 4 has a contact-portion 4<SP>1</SP> within a cavity 2 and a plurality of contact points are thus provided on the portion 41 for engagement with a printed circuit card inserted between the portion 4<SP>1</SP> and the lowest side of the cavity 2; barrier portions bare provided in the body 1. In Fig. 2 the resiliency of a wire 3<SP>2</SP> as a whole is afforded by the bent form of the wire in leaving the cavity 2 by way of passage 5<SP>2</SP>. An additional loop 10, Fig. 3, enhances the resilience of the contact portion 9. The contact wire 34 shown in Fig. 4 has a zig-zag contact portion 12 which, when the card is inserted, extends further into the cavity 2. If the inclination of the zig-zag contact portion is too acute, the card may become difficult to extract but this may be desirable for some applications. Alternatively, Fig. 5 (not shown), means may be provided for extending the contact portion and releasing its grip on the card. In further examples, Figs. 7, 8 (not shown), contacts engage the card on both sides at one or more contact points on each side.
