Abstract
859,617. Submarine tankers. NEDERLANDSCHE VEREENIGDE SCHEEPSBOUW BUREAUX N.V. Oct. 15, 1959 [Oct. 20, 1958], No. 33460/58. Class 113. A submarine tanker comprises a non-pressure resistant outer hull 11 and three pressureresistant hulls 12, 13 and 14, joined together by longitudinal bulkheads 24, 25 and 26 and to the hull 11 by longitudinal bulkheads 31, 32 and 33. The space within the hull 11 is available for cargo and that within the hull 12 for crew and navigational equipment. Propulsive machinery and cargo compensating tanks are contained within the hulls 13 and 14. The hulls 12, 13 and 14 are disposed longitudinally of the main hull 11 with the hulls 13 and 14 having their longitudinal axes in, or adjacent, the horizontal plane passing through the longitudinal axis of the hull 11. The bulkheads 24, 25 and 26 lie in or ajacent the three planes each of which contain the longitudinal axes of two of the hulls 12, 13 and 14 and the enclosed space 27 constitutes ballast tank space. The bulkheads 31, 32 and 33 may be replaced by two longitudinal bulkheads each extending downwardly from the lowest point of are of the hulls 13, 14 to the lowest point of the hull 11 and the enclosed space may be used for ballast when docking. The cross-section of the submarine may be circular and a further pressure hull may be provided at the aft end of the hull 11 for the propulsion equipment.
