Abstract
858,702. Portable turning apparatus; screwing. KEY ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. May 7, 1957 [May 9, 1956], No. 14406/56. Class 83 (3). A portable machine for turning and screwthreading the ends of pipes 4 comprises a toolcarrying spindle 1 in a tubular guide 2 held in the pipe by resilient expansion means 3 carried by the guide, the spindle engaging screw-threads 7 in the guide to feed it as it is rotated by hand or by power means. As applied to turning a taper 34 on the outside of the pipe-end with a cutter 23 and facing the pipe-end with a cutter 22, the means 3, in the form of tyres expanded by compressed air or, as illustrated, blocks or rings of rubber, are arranged between flanges 8 separated by a sleeve 13 integral with one of the flanges. With the spindle preferably removed from the guide 2, the latter can be turned by a key 32 to clamp the flanges between a collar 9 at one end of the guide and a nut 11 on screw-threads at the other end, and held against rotation by a screw 12 having a screwthreaded or plane end engaging the adjacent flange 8. Thus the rings 3 are expanded to engage the bore. The spindle 1 has a reduced portion 14, which runs on to the screw-threads 7 at the end of the feed, permitting rotation of the spindle without feed for finishing the machined surfaces, and carries an arm 17 by which it may be rotated and which supports a tool-post 16 in a radial slot 21. A spigot 19 on the post 16 engages the slot 21, the cutters 22, 23 being secured by screws 28, 29 in a passage 24 and a slot 27 respectively, in the post. For taper-turning the bore and facing the pipe-end, the clamping rings 3 are repositioned, Fig. 2, with the sleeve 13 between the rings and the collar 9. The tool-post and cutters are also repositioned, engaging a spigot 18 in the radial slot 21 and the cutter 22 in a passage 26, the cutter 23 being inverted in its slot 27. The cutters are tapered, or untapered cutters may be used in tapered passages. For cutting screw-threads, one or two cutters may be used.
